Profile
We previously explained the concept of a mermaid. A mermaid is a delicate and exceptionally beautiful girl with a tail resembling a fish’s. Some have described mermaids as winged creatures. In the early 20th century, specifically in 1917, a new type of mermaid emerged: the Cotingley Fairies.

However, it was later discovered that this type of mermaid was not real. Photography was not known in those years; that is, graphic arts and the ability to combine and create images were not widespread. Two girls placed pieces of paper next to them and took some photos with these pieces. Despite many people knowing that these photos were composites, this act caused a great stir and media attention.
What is the story of the Cottingery Fairies?
The story of these fairies begins with two teenage girls, Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright, taking pictures of fairies or mermaids in their garden. The two girls knew nothing about the art of photography or the various techniques of developing. It is said that photography experts who saw the negatives did not see any trace of tampering with these negatives or double exposure.
