Tarneit is a tiny neighbourhood in Wyndham shire with a lot of houses. Its residential area is 27 kilometres west of downtown Melbourne, immediately north and west of Hoppers Crossing. The Werribee River, 32 kilometres from downtown Melbourne, forms its western (backwoods) border. Tarneit is the name of the first survey community, and it is said to be derived from an Aboriginal word meaning “white.”

Tarneit is situated on the basaltic Werribee plains and was formerly part of an agricultural region with grid-like roadways that split the land into one-square-mile districts. A school was established in 1875 and functioned until 1932 near the junction of Hogans and Tarneit Roads. The district’s population never exceeded 200 people during its rural days, and a devastating fire in the 1950s destroyed much of what was left standing.
